Que es un.. como se dice... "telenovela?"

Growing-up in a Mexican household had its dramatics. From the loud laughter, to the loud speakers playing cumbias on Saturday mornings. Telenovelas. We would sit from 7pm-8pm or 8pm-9pm watching our favorite stars on screen. Would they fall in love? Would the evil mother-in-law intervene? Would they make it? I felt every emotion as the new scene played out in front of my little eyes.

As I grew-up, telenovelas became less of a routine. They stopped being as iconic as the older ones. Instead, my family and I began watching series such as La Casa de Papel or Quien Mato a Sara. They pull the same emotions I felt as a child. But they are not telenovelas. Yes, sometimes they have similar plots but they cannot be compared.

Telenovelas are not defined by seasons. Instead they are showcased through installments that are delivered to the audience on a daily schedule. It is usually 5-6 days of the week. They have a great scheme of emotions. You feel as if you are on an hour long ride at Six Flags. They are split into three parts: the setip, develop, and resolution. Basically, we are introduced to characters and we get to know them based off of their actions in front of and behind other characters. Eventually these actions tend to wreak havoc. This is where the juicy things happen. Things tend to get much worse before they get better. Towards the end, the conflicts resolve and characters "encounter their fate." Each episode has a new setup so that first time watchers come back for the next episode. This is also the reason each episode has a cliffhanger at the end (Fridays always have the worst ones!).

Series tend to have an final season which allows all the conflicts to be resolved into the last season. Telenovelas tend to be resolved in the final episode.

  1. Hola Brisa!
