Telenovelas and their Homes
A component of telenovela production I find fascinating is the aspect of the location. I will admit that I figured it out later than I probably should've how out-of-order things are actually filmed — that episodes aren't finished before future ones are started if they're in the right location. Geography is a huge consideration that I didn't necessarily take into account but that producers, directors, and crews have to think of first.
Being an out-of-state student from a completely different region of the United States means that there's a lot about the state of Georgia that I don't necessarily know or have learned since coming here. Through my roommate Demi who is an EMST major I have learned a lot about the vibrancy of the film industry in Atlanta. Huge movies like some of the Avengers, Red Notice, Baby Driver, and Ride Along were filmed in Atlanta along with television shows like Cobra Kai, Stranger Things, and Ozark. That's not to say that they are set in the city of Atlanta, but they use the facilities and scenery.
So, that got me wondering more about places in the United States that serve as a home for different telenovelas. Before taking this class I didn't know all that much about the industry but with both Telemundo and Univisión reaching for Latino audiences in the US I figured it wouldn't be farfetched if things were also filmed here. And just like I learned a lot as an out-of-state student, I learned more as a student in this class.
Based on what I found on the results pages of some Google searches, Miami is a huge hub for telenovela production. This wasn't very surprising considering that's where Telemundo's headquarters are and there is a strong Latino population. Telenovelas like Cosita Linda, El Capo 3, Dueños del Paraiso, Eva Luna, and La Viuda Negra were all filmed or partially filmed in Miami. Those shows are filmed in Hialeah and Doral, two cities in the Miami metropolitan area.
Connecting the beginning part of this blog with the context of Miami being the main city where telenovelas shot in the United States are produced, I wonder if there will be a point where some telenovelas are shot in Atlanta. From what my roommate told me, it's a popular choice because there is great infrastructure but the cost of living is significantly more affordable than in Hollywood. From my preliminary searching, I couldn't really find anything on shooting telenovelas in Atlanta, but I also may have missed something slash don't know what direction the industry is moving in. It'll be interesting seeing how the production of telenovela in the United States change over time and what cities may find themselves serving as their home.
